What makes a really good manager?

What makes an ideal manager from the staff's perspective? I've had my fair share of managers – the majority of both good and bad. If I were to put together an ideal boss from my own time as an employee he/she would look something like this:

He/she ...
1. Explains what must be done and keeps everyone on track.

2. Is clearly on my side if trouble arises. You know the old saying: “Correct your friend at home, but praise him/her in front of others”.

3. Listens to suggestions, even though it's sometimes disguised as whining.

4. Takes an interest in active employee development, more so than having meaningless mandatory appraisal talks once a year.

5. Takes care of ambitious people – in the company's best interest.

6. Is the boss because he/she likes to be the boss, not because it has become a natural career.

7. Sets standards and provides rewards for a job well done.

8. Dares to relinquish control and trusts people.

9. Delegates and monitors – approves – and delegates even more.

10. Realizes his/her importance for the wellbeing of the staff. A good manager leaves the personal problems at home - at home.

Are you a good boss?
