Personal Productivity 2.0

Here's a really tough proposal: Whatever you do during the next three months, you can choose to ask yourself the question:

“Is this good for the company/project /long term plan/me?

If you make it a rule to always ask yourself that question, then you will be automatically effective. There are so many things that we do every day and during the weeks that lead nowhere. So think about all the pastry meetings you can skip. Think of all the time wasters (checking their emails eight times an hour) and endless processes (Screw industrial democracy!) that you can get rid of.

Perhaps you should even fire the customer who never does you any good. Think about it. I'm not talking about becoming a machine. I'm talking about priorities that will make you a much nicer person for those who really need you.

This is what you can do:

Put a small imaginary figure on your shoulder who always asks:
- “Is what you are doing now important to do right now to get you where you're going?”

(I always try to dodge these things myself).

- “No, but I'll just ... (check your emails, clean your desk, gossip a little with some people).

Then he reminds you again:
- “If you take care of the most important issues straight away (which most often also are the hardest part), then you are free of it”.

And that's smart, right?
