How to get the boring stuff done directly

Today you will learn a trick to help you cheat yourself into doing the things that you have to do, but often put aside for later.

What did you say? Did you say you are one of those who never procrastinate or put away anything that is boring? In that case, I'll take my hat off for you. You are a much better person than I am. You don't have to read this (you can walk around and be one of those tediously perfect people all day instead).

For the rest of us poor folks who have deficiencies, there is a little trick to get extremely boring things done. I know this trick well by now and use it several times a week - both at work and at home.

Here's the trick:

Say you get a bunch of boring papers from your accountant, you must finish writing a report or you need to take hold of a pesky situation at work - make up your mind to give it five minutes.

Five minutes?!

Yes, you read that right. Decide to give the problem five tiny minutes. I think you can spare five minutes even on something boring. It feels reasonably long. Just take five minutes to read that pile of papers someone put on your table and that you are expected to have opinions on.

The beauty of this method is that it breaks down the biggest resistance of it all - getting started. You are fooling yourself into thinking that you are just going to be bored for five minutes, but once you get started, you will do the rest of the job because you're on a roll.

Try it out this week and enjoy escaping from that nagging feeling in your gut.
