Do you lose money on your e-mails?

More and more websites become really profitable, but at the same time studies show irritating facts that many companies don't even respond to emails.

In short, we now have two separate camps: Those who understand and those who are wasting their trust - and their money - online.

Case study:

Last spring, I received an assignment to be involved in turning a major retail chain into the best online business available. I started by shocking them – I put out an attractive question to all their stores by e-mail. I pretended to be a customer who needed a brand new equipment X. I was in a bit of a hurry and willing to buy right away.

The results were frightening:
• Only 12% of the stores responded the same day (that's OK).
• If they didn't answer within a day, they failed.
From day two onwards there were the occasional scattered responses, some misspelled, some uninspired with short invitations to come to the store (if you feel like it, if not ...well, that's OK, too). Some even wanted me to call them, even though my phone number was enclosed with the message.

Two weeks after I sent the letter, just over half of the recipients had responded.
Did you hear that? Just half of the stores.

I told them I wanted to buy stuff for 3 to 5 000 dollars. I already knew what I wanted and all they had to do, was to respond and tell me that they'd be happy to take my money.
But nothing happened.
And this big chain of stores wanted to be the best on the net.

The important question now is:
If I were to send a similar letter to your business - how quickly would you be able to sell me the things I needed?
